Description

Indications
- Treatment of all types of epilepsy including partial, absence, generalized tonic-clonic, myoclonic, atonic seizures
- Prophylaxis of febrile convulsion
- Prophylaxis of post-traumatic epilepsy
- Treatment of bipolar disorder
- Prophylaxis of migraine
Composition
- Sodium Valproate tablet containing 200 mg of Sodium Valproate BP
- Sodium Valproate syrup containing 200 mg of Sodium Valproate BP
- Sodium Valproate controlled release tablets in 200mg, 300mg, and 500mg strengths
- Sodium Valproate injection containing Sodium Valproate BP equivalent to 500 mg of Valproic Acid
Mode of Action
- Has anti-epileptic activity against various seizures
- Increases brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
Dosage and Administration
- Oral tablets given once or twice daily, syrup in divided doses
- Dosage varies for different conditions and age groups
- Injection given via slow intravenous injection or infusion
Interaction
- Acts as a non-specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
- Significant interactions with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side Effects
- Common side effects include anorexia, nausea, and vomiting
- Effects on CNS include sedation, ataxia, and tremor
- Rare cases of rash, alopecia, and appetite stimulation
- May elevate liver enzymes and cause fulminate hepatitis
- Prone to hepatic injury, acute pancreatitis, and hyperammonemia in specific patient groups
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Crosses the placenta and associated with neural tube defects in newborns
- Excreted in breast milk with no apparent risk to the child
Precautions and Warnings
- Monitor liver functions before and during therapy
- Ensure no potential for bleeding before major surgery
- Use with caution in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and systemic lupus erythematosus
- May lead to false interpretation of urine ketone test
