Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side effects
- Common side effects: anorexia, nausea, vomiting
- CNS effects: sedation, ataxia, tremor
- Other effects: rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
- Hepatic function effects: elevation of liver enzymes, fulminate hepatitis
- Prone to suffer from hepatic injury, acute pancreatitis, hyperammonemia
Pregnancy & lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Associated with neural tube defects in newborns
- Excreted in breast milk
- No risk to the child from breast-feeding mothers
Precautions & warnings
- Monitoring of liver functions
- Check for potential bleeding before surgery
- Care in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and systemic lupus erythematosus
- Partially eliminated in the urine as a ketone metabolite
- Avoid sudden withdrawal of therapy
