Pharmacology

Propranolol Hydrochloride is a B-adrenergic receptor blocking drug used in hypertension and angina pectoris. It antagonizes catecholamines at B-adrenergic receptors, preventing excess heart rate and force of contraction, and decreasing oxygen consumption by the heart.

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult (above 18 years): Initially 80 mg twice daily for hypertension, maintenance dose of 160-320 mg daily
  • Adult (above 18 years): Initially 40 mg 2-3 times daily for angina pectoris, maintenance dose of 120-240 mg daily
  • Adult (above 18 years): 10-40 mg, 3-4 times daily for thyrotoxicosis
  • Adult (above 18 years): 40 mg once daily for anxiety, may be increased to three times daily
  • Adult (above 18 years): Initially 40 mg 2-3 times daily for prophylaxis of migraine, then maintenance dose of 80-160 mg daily
  • Child (From day 1 to 18 years) hypertension dosage ranges

Interaction

Patients receiving verapamil, salbutamol, ergot alkaloids, and other drugs should be closely observed during therapy.

Contraindications

Bronchospasm, cardiogenic shock, second or third degree heart block, diabetes mellitus, etc.
