Indications
- Duodenal ulcer
- Gastric ulcer
- Chronic gastritis
- Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage
Pharmacology
- Non-systemic
- Minimally absorbed
- Promotes healing of ulcers
- Inhibits pepsin and bile action
Dosage
- Adult dose: 2 gm twice daily
- Pediatric dose: Safety not established
- Elderly dose: No special requirements
- Prophylaxis dose: 1 gm orally or via nasogastric tube
Administration
Take on an empty stomach, avoid antacid within 30 minutes
Interaction
- Reduces bioavailability of certain drugs
- Interacts with fluoroquinolones, tetracycline, ketoconazole, etc.
- Not to be co-administered with citrate preparations
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to sucralfate

- Periodic laboratory testing recommended for patients with impairment of renal function
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for use in children under 14 years
- No dose adjustments necessary for elderly patients
Overdose Effects
Mostly asymptomatic, with few cases of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting reported
