Indications
- Treatment of duodenal ulcer
- Treatment of gastric ulcer
- Treatment of chronic gastritis
- Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage
Pharmacology
- Non-systemic drug
- Minimally absorbed from gastrointestinal tract
- Promotes healing of ulcers by forming chemical complex at ulcer site
- Inhibits action of pepsin and bile
Dosage
- Usual dose for adults: 2gm twice daily or 1gm four times a day
- Maximum daily dose for resistant cases: 8gm
- Pediatric population: Safety and efficacy not established
- Elderly: No special dosage requirements
Administration
- Take on an empty stomach
- Do not administer antacids within 30 minutes
Interaction
- May reduce bioavailability of certain drugs
- Bioavailability restoration by separating administration from Ucrafate by two hours
- Should not be co-administered with citrate preparations
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to sucralfate
Side Effects
- Common adverse events: headache, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, urticaria
- Bezoar formation reported in some cases
- Episodes of hyperglycemia reported in diabetic patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnant women not established
- Caution in breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with renal dysfunction
- Not recommended for individuals on dialysis
- Laboratory testing recommended for patients with impairment of renal function
- Concomitant use of other aluminium containing medications not recommended
- Bezoars reported in severely ill patients
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for use in children under 14 years of age
- No dose adjustments necessary for elderly patients
- Use with caution in renal insufficiency patients
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines: Patients should not drive if feel dizzy or drowsy
Overdose Effects
- Most cases remain asymptomatic
- Symptoms may include abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting in some cases
