Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 50 mg for hypertension
- Initial dose of 50 mg for angina pectoris
- Initial intravenous dose for acute myocardial infarction
Interaction
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs additive effect
- Additive effect with calcium channel blockers
- Potential severe bradycardia with disopyramide
- Additive effect with amiodarone
- Exacerbation of rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal
- Decreased hypotensive effects with prostaglandin synthase inhibiting drugs
- More severe allergic reaction with history of anaphylaxis
- Increased risk of bradycardia with concomitant use of digitalis glycosides
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia
- Heart block greater than first degree
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt cardiac failure
- Hypersensitivity to atenolol or any of the drug product’s components

- Mesenteric arterial thrombosis
- Skin rashes and dry eyes
- Erythematous rash
