Indications
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular prevention
- Atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus with documented target organ damage
Pharmacology
- Non-peptide angiotensin-ll receptor antagonist
- Vasoconstriction
- Stimulation of aldosterone release
- Renal reabsorption of sodium
Dosage & Administration
- Individualized dosage
- Usual starting dose of 40mg once a day
- Blood pressure response is dose-related
- No initial dosage adjustment for elderly patients or patients with renal impairment
- Pediatric use not established
- Up titrate slowly in patients with hepatic impairment
Interaction
- Increased risk of renal impairment with NSAIDs
- Co-administration with aliskiren in patients with diabetes should be avoided
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the product or any of its components

- Sinus pain and congestion
- Back pain
- Diarrhea
- Intermittent claudication
- Skin ulcer
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C (first trimester) and D (second and third trimester)
- Adverse effects on the nursing infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid fetal or neonatal exposure
- Hypotension
- Monitoring in impaired hepatic or renal function
- Avoid concomitant use of an ACE inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker
Overdose Effects
- Hypotension
- Dizziness
- Tachycardia
- Bradycardia
- Increase in serum creatinine
- Acute renal failure
