Indications
- Treatment of HIV-1 infection
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults
Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action: Inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase
- Pharmacokinetics: Water soluble diester prodrug, oral bioavailability of approximately 25%
Dosage & Administration
- Size and frequency of dosage must be adjusted
- Recommended dose in adults: 245 mg tablet once daily orally, without regard to food
- Recommended dose in pediatric patients: one 245 mg tablet once daily taken orally
Interaction
- Coadministration with didanosine
- Coadministration with atazanavir
- Coadministration with lopinavir/ritonavir
Contraindications
- Broken bone due to disease or illness
- Enlarged fatty liver
- Severe liver disease
- Acute kidney disease
- Decreased calcification or density of bone
- Breastfeeding mother
- Low amount of phosphate in the blood
- Increased blood acidity
- Overweight
