Indications
- Control of acute asthma
- Management of chronic asthma (Symptomatic and prophylactic treatment)
- Controlling nocturnal asthma and early morning wheezing
- Management of chronic obstructive lung disease (Chronic bronchitis and emphysema)
- Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive lung disease
- Control of apnea of pre-maturity
Pharmacology
- Bronchodilator
- Methylxanthine
- Smooth muscle relaxation
- Suppression of airways response to stimuli
- Increases force of contraction of diaphragmatic muscles
- Half-life influenced by various variables
Dosage & Administration
- Individualized dose based on peak serum theophylline concentration
- Sustained release preparations administered every 12 hours in adults
- Administration every 8 hours may be necessary in some children
- Recommended maintenance dose based on age
Interaction
- Not to be used concurrently with other preparations containing xanthine derivatives
- Clearance influenced by various drugs
- Potentiates hypokalemia
- Requires monitoring of serum potassium levels
