Indications
- Hypertension
- Angina
- Moderate to severe heart failure
- Not recommended for emergency treatment of hypertensive crises
Pharmacology
- High affinity for ß1 receptor
- Reduces heart rate and cardiac output

Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose of 5mg once daily
- Dose titration every 2 weeks
- Caution in hepatic impairment and renal dysfunction
- No need to adjust dose for geriatrics
Interaction
- Should not be combined with other β-blocking agents
- Monitoring required with catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Exacerbates rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal
- Use with care when myocardial depressants are used concurrently
Contraindications
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt heart failure
- Second or third degree A-V block
- Right ventricular failure secondary to pulmonary hypertension
- Sinus bradycardia
