Indications
- Treatment of moderate to severe painful conditions
- Postoperative pain
- Colic and spastic pain
- Cancer pain
- Joint pain
- Neck and back pain
- Pain associated with osteoporosis
Pharmacology
- Centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound
- Inhibition of neurotransmitter reuptake
- Mediation of pain impulses
- Stimulation of mu-opioid receptors
- Modulation of central monoaminergic inhibitory pathways
Dosage & Administration
- Usual doses of 50 to 100 mg every 4-6 hours
- Initial dose of 100 mg for acute pain
- Initial dose of 50 mg for chronic painful conditions
- Sustained release capsule or tablet administration every 12 hours
- Injection dose of 50-100 mg every 4-6 hours
- Suppository administration in adults
Interaction
- Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors are not recommended for combination
- Concomitant administration of carbamazepine increases Utramal metabolism
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Acute intoxication with alcohol, hypnotics, analgesics, opioids, or psychotropic drugs

Precautions & Warnings
- Respiratory depression risk
- Not recommended for opioid-dependent patients
- Caution with CNS depressants
- Caution in patients taking MAO inhibitors
- Caution in patients with increased intracranial pressure or head injury, and acute abdominal conditions
Use in Special Populations
- Can be given in children from the age of 1 year
- Suppository not to be administered in children and adolescents below the age of 14 years
- Utramal 100 mg SR Capsules not studied in children
