Pharmacology

  • Strong antifibrinolytic action
  • Inhibition of the plasminogen activation

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual dose for adults: 500-1000 mg 3 times daily
  • Mean recommended daily doses for children: 0.5-1 gm orally, 500 mg by the parenteral route

Interaction

  • Incompatible with solutions containing penicillins
  • Thrombolytic drugs antagonize the antifibrinolytic action
  • Increased potential for thrombus formation by estrogen-containing drugs

Contraindications

  • Known individual hypersensitivity to the product
  • Thromboembolic disease
  • Arterial and venous thrombosis
  • Serious kidney failure

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Tranexamic Acid should not be administered during known and presumed pregnancy
  • Tranexamic Acid passes into breast milk to a concentration of approximately one hundredth of the concentration in the maternal blood

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use in cases of hyperfibrinolysis
  • Prophylactic treatment must begin 24 hours before the operation and continue until 3-4 days after it
  • Therapy of hemorrhages must be prolonged for at least 24 hours after manifestations have disappeared
  • Reduce doses in hematuria to prevent clot formation in the urinary tract
  • Careful use in renal insufficiency, anuric syndromes, cardiopathic, and hepatopathic subjects
