Indications
- Treatment of mild, moderate or severe heart failure
- Treatment in conjunction with digitalis, diuretics and ACE inhibitor
- Reduction of disease progression
- Use in patients unable to tolerate an ACE inhibitor
- Use in patients not receiving digitalis, hydralazine or nitrate therapy
Pharmacology
- Non-selective antagonism of beta-adrenergic receptors
- Alpha-adrenergic antagonistic activity
- Antiproliferative properties
- Scavenger of reactive free oxidant radicals
- Used in the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and congestive heart failure
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose in hypertension: 12.5 mg once daily
- Increased dose in hypertension: up to 50 mg daily
- Initial dose in angina pectoris: 12.5 mg twice daily
- Recommended dose in angina pectoris: 25 mg twice daily
- Initial dose in heart failure: 3.125 mg twice daily
- Increased dose in heart failure: up to 25 mg twice daily for patients less than 85 kg body-weight and 50 mg twice daily for patients over 85 kg

Contraindications
- Decompensated heart failure requiring intravenous inotropic therapy
- Bronchial asthma or related bronchospastic conditions
- Second or third-degree AV block
- Sick sinus syndrome without a permanent pacemaker
- Cardiogenic shock
- Severe bradycardia

Precautions & Warnings

- Ensure renal function and heart failure are not deteriorating before increasing dose
