Indications
- Used before surgery to treat uterine fibroids
- For moderate to severe symptoms of uterine fibroids
- Used in adult women who have not reached menopause
Pharmacology
- Ulipristal acetate is a selective progesterone receptor modulator
- Blocks the receptor of progesterone hormone
- Controls the growth of the lining of the womb
- Reduces the size of fibroids and related symptoms
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose is one tablet (5 mg) a day
- Taken orally
- Treatment should start during the first week of the menstrual cycle
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Genital bleeding of unknown cause or other than uterine fibroids
- Uterine, cervical, ovarian, or breast cancer
Side Effects
- Endometrial thickening
- Hot flush
- Headache
- Uterine haemorrhage
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category X
- Contraindicated during pregnancy
- Not recommended during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed after careful diagnosis
- Pregnancy should be precluded prior to treatment
- Concomitant use with progestagen-only pills not recommended
- Endometrial changes may occur
- Bleeding pattern may change
- Not recommended for women with severe uncontrolled asthma
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended in severe hepatic impairment
- Not recommended in moderate and severe renal impairment
- Closely monitor patients with hepatic or renal impairment
