Description

UDCA (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is used to treat various hepatobiliary disorders. It reduces the cholesterol saturation of bile and promotes the dissolution of gallstones through several mechanisms.

Primary Billiary Cirrhosis (PBC)
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)

Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis (NASH)

Mode of action

Decreases secretion of cholesterol in bile
Reduces cholesterol absorption
Suppresses liver cholesterol synthesis
Alters bile composition from supersaturated to unsaturated
Promotes formation of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes

Dosage and administration

Dissolution of gallstones: 8-12 mg/kg/day either as single night time dose or in divided doses
Primary billiary cirrhosis: 10-15 mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses
Acute viral hepatitis: 600 mg/day
Alcoholic fatty liver: 300 mg/day
Primary sclerosing cholangitis: 25-30 mg/kg/day
Nash and gallstone dissolution: 13-15 mg/kg/day

Interaction

UDCA should not be used with drugs that increase bile cholesterol, such as oestrogenic hormones. Concomitant administration with bile-acid binding drugs should be avoided.

Non-functioning gall-bladder
Calcified and pigmented gallstones
Inflammatory bowel disease
