Description
Reduces cholesterol saturation of bile and promotes dissolution of gallstones by reducing cholesterol absorption and increasing bile acid secretion rate.
Pharmacology
- Decreases secretion of cholesterol in bile
- Suppresses liver cholesterol synthesis
- Promotes the formation of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes
Mode of Action
- Protects cholangiocytes against cytotoxicity of hydrophobic bile acids
- Stimulates hepatobiliary secretion
- Protects hepatocytes against bile acid-induced apoptosis
Dosage & Administration
Varies for different conditions, ranging from 300 mg/day to 25-30 mg/kg/day
Interaction
Should not be used with drugs that increase bile cholesterol or bile-acid binding drugs
Contraindications
- Non-functioning gall-bladder
- Calcified and pigmented gallstones
- Inflammatory bowel disease
Side Effects
- Nausea

- Gallstone opacilication
- Pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category B
- No evidence of harm in pregnancy
- Effectively used for cholestasis of pregnancy
- No documented problems in breastfeeding
