Description

Indications
- Cholestasis (Jaundice)
- Viral Hepatitis
- Alcoholic Fatty Liver
- Primary Billiary Cirrhosis (PBC)
- Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
- Dissolution of Gallstones
- Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis (NASH)
Dosage and Administration
- 8-12 mg/kg/day for dissolution of gallstones
- 10-15 mg/kg/day for primary biliary cirrhosis
- 600 mg/day for acute viral hepatitis
- 300 mg/day for alcoholic fatty liver
- 25-30 mg/kg/day for primary sclerosing cholangitis
Pharmacology
- Decreases secretion of cholesterol in bile
- Reduces cholesterol absorption
- Suppresses liver cholesterol synthesis
- Promotes formation of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes
- Improves cholestatic liver diseases
Interaction
- Avoid concomitant use with oestrogenic hormones
- Avoid concomitant use with bile-acid binding drugs
Contraindications
- Non-functioning gall-bladder
- Calcified and pigmented gallstones
- Inflammatory bowel disease
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Gallstone opacilication
- Pruritus
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Pregnancy category B
- No evidence of harm reported in pregnancy
- Effectively used for cholestasis of pregnancy
- No documented problems regarding breastfeeding
