Description
Reduces cholesterol saturation of bile and promotes dissolution of gallstones. Decreases cholesterol absorption and suppresses liver cholesterol synthesis.
Pharmacology
- Decreases secretion of cholesterol in bile
- Promotes formation of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes
- Improves cholestatic liver diseases by protecting cholangiocytes, stimulating hepatobilliary secretion, and protecting hepatocytes against bile acid-induced apoptosis
- Completely absorbed in the upper intestine, with varying time to peak serum concentration and absorption rate
Dosage & Administration
- Dissolution of Gall stones: 8-12 mg/kg/day either as single night time dose or in divided doses
- Primary Billiary Cirrhosis: 10-15 mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses
- Acute Viral Hepatitis: 600 mg/day
- Alcoholic Fatty Liver: 300 mg/day
- Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: 25-30 mg/kg/day
Interaction
Should not be used with drugs that increase bile cholesterol or bile-acid binding drugs
Contraindications
- Non-functioning gall-bladder
- Calcified and pigmented gallstones
- Inflammatory bowel disease

Pregnancy category B. No evidence of harm reported in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
