Indications
- Hypertension
- Reducing hospitalizations in patients with congestive heart failure
- Reducing death in patients with congestive heart failure after myocardial infarction
Pharmacology
- Oral medication
- Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)

Dosage
- Usual dose of 80-160 mg once daily for hypertension
- Usual dose of 40 mg twice daily for heart failure
- Initial dose of 20 mg twice daily after myocardial infarction
Administration
- Should be taken on an empty stomach
- No initial dosage adjustment required for elderly patients with mild to moderate renal and hepatic insufficiency
Interaction
- No drug interactions of clinical significance found
- No expected metabolic induction or inhibition of the cytochrome P450 system
- Caution advised with potassium sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or salt substitutes containing potassium

Overdose Effects
- Manifestations of hypotension and tachycardia likely
- Supine position and intravenous infusion of normal saline recommended if hypotension occurs
