Indications
- Hypertension

Pharmacology
- Belongs to the class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
- Specific angiotensin II antagonist acting on the AT1 subtype
- Dilates blood vessels and reduces blood pressure without affecting pulse rate
Dosage
- Usual dose of 80 to 160 mg for hypertension
- Dose of 40 mg twice daily for heart failure
- Initial dose of 20 mg twice daily for post-Myocardial Infarction
Administration
- Should be taken on an empty stomach to avoid decreased absorption
- No initial dosage adjustment required for elderly patients with mild to moderate renal and hepatic insufficiency
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions found
- Compounds studied in clinical trials include Cimetidine, Warfarin, Furosemide, Digoxin, Atenolol, Indomethacin, Hydrochlorothiazide, Amlodipine, Glibenclamide

Precautions & Warnings

Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
- No overall difference in the efficacy or safety in geriatric use
- Dosage adjustments in mild to moderate hepatic impairment
- Contraindicated in severe hepatic impairment
Overdose Effects
- Manifestations could be hypotension, tachycardia, and bradycardia
- Supine position and intravenous infusion of normal saline may be necessary in case of excessive hypotension
