Indications
- Improves glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Monotherapy and dual combination with other antidiabetic agents
Pharmacology
- Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor
- Slows inactivation of incretin hormones
- Regulates glucose homeostasis
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended daily doses of 50mg or 100mg
- Different doses for monotherapy and dual combination
- May be taken with or without a meal
- No dosage adjustment needed for elderly or mild renal impairment
Interaction
- No interactions with specific medications observed in pharmacokinetic studies
- Potential reduction in glucose-lowering effect with certain active substances
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients
- Moderate to severe renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment with elevated liver enzymes
- Type 1 diabetes
Side Effects
- Majority of adverse reactions are mild and transient
- Rare case of hepatic dysfunction observed
- No additional safety signals in long-term trials
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy
- Not recommended for use during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients aged 75 years and older
- Monitoring of liver function tests (LFTs) prior to initiation and periodically thereafter
- Monitoring and discontinuation in case of increased transaminase levels or liver dysfunction
- Caution in congestive heart failure patients
- Do not use in NYHA functional class III IV
