Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
- Loss of cytoplasmic microtubules
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Depletes energy level of helminths
- Immobilization and subsequent parasite death
- Binding and inhibition of parasite tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
- Anthelmintic activity of metabolites
- Excretion of metabolites in urine

- Adult dosage of 400 mg as a single dose
- Children over 2 years dose of 400 mg as a single dose

Contraindications
- Not for use in neonates
