Indications
- Indicated in single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended adult dose of 400 mg as a single dose for certain infections
- Recommended children dose of 200 mg for certain infections
- Higher doses for hydatid disease, strongyloidiasis, taeniasis, giardiasis
- Specific dosages based on age and weight
- Duration of treatment cycles for echinococcosis
Pharmacology
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Thought to exert anthelmintic effect by inhibiting tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized, primarily in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from gastrointestinal tract
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not normally used in neonates
- Dose reduction may be needed in children weighing less than 10 kg
- Avoid in pregnant women
- No evidence to alter dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
