Indications
- Single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid
Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
- Used in the treatment of intestinal nematode infections
Pharmacology
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activities
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Depletes energy level in parasites
- Binds and inhibits parasite tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended doses for adults, children over 2 years, children of 1-2 years
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
- Different doses for hydatid disease, strongyloidiasis, taeniasis, giardiasis
- Instructions for repeated treatment cycles
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not normally used in neonates
- Potential dose reduction for children weighing less than 10 kg
- Avoid in pregnancy or women thought to be pregnant
- No evidence for dose alteration in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
