Description
A cough expectorant and mucolytic medicine used to treat various respiratory conditions associated with viscid mucus.
Indications
- Productive cough
- Acute and chronic bronchitis
- Inflammatory disease of respiratory tract
- Asthmatic bronchitis
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia
Pharmacology
- Active metabolite of bromhexine
- Bronchosecretolytic effect
- Improves sputum rheology
- Stimulates production of surfactant
- Reduces bronchial hyperactivity
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Improves airway patency in COPD patients
Dosage & Administration
- Pediatric Drops:
- 0-6 months: 0.5 ml 2 times a day
- 6-12 months: 1 ml 2 times a day
- 1-2 years: 1.25 ml 2 times a day
- Syrup:
- 2-5 years: 2.5 ml 2-3 times a day
- 5-10 years: 5 ml 2-3 times a day
- 10 years and adults: 10 ml 3 times a day
- Sustained release capsule: Adults and children over 12 years old: 1 capsule once daily
Interaction
Should not be taken simultaneously with antitussives (e.g. Codeine) as it may hinder expectoration of liquefied phlegm.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine

- Gastrointestinal side effects
- Allergic responses such as eruption and urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not advised for use in pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester. Safety during lactation not established.
Precautions & Warnings
Cautious use in patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration, convulsive disorders, hepatic and renal insufficiency.
