Indications
- Productive cough
- Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of upper and lower respiratory tracts
- Inflammatory disease of rhinopharyngeal tract
- Asthmatic bronchitis bronchial asthma with thick expectoration
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia
Pharmacology
- Ambroxol as an active metabolite of bromhexine
- Greater bronchosecretolytic effect compared to bromhexine
- Improves sputum rheology by hydrating mechanism
- Liquefaction of mucus in the respiratory tract
- Stimulates production of phospholipids of surfactant
- Reduces bronchial hyperactivity
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Improves airway patency in COPD patients
Dosage & Administration
- Average daily dose (preferably after meal)
- Pediatric Drops for different age groups
- Syrup for different age groups
- Sustained release capsule for adults and children over 12 years old
Interaction
- Should not be taken simultaneously with antitussives (e.g. Codeine)
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects like epigastric pain and stomach overfull feeling
- Rare allergic responses such as eruption, urticaria, or angioneurotic edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies have shown no harmful effect of Ambroxol
- Advised not to use in pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester
- Safety during lactation has not been established yet
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration or convulsive disorders
- Caution in patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency
