Description
SB-Ator 20 mg Tablet is indicated to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides levels in various diseases. It is a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase with rapid absorption after oral administration.
Dosage
- 10 mg once daily for adults
- Starting dose of 10 mg once daily for children (10-18 years)
- Adjusted dosage according to response for prevention of cardiovascular events
Administration
- To be taken with or without food
- Dosage range from 10 to 80 mg once daily
- Lipid levels to be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after initiation
Mode of Action
Lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and increasing hepatic LDL receptors for enhanced uptake and catabolism of LDL.
Indications
- Reducing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in patients with heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia
- Reducing elevated cholesterol and triglycerides in patients with mixed dyslipidemia
- Treating patients with elevated serum triglyceride levels in hypertriglyceridaemia
- For reducing cardiac ischaemic events in patients with coronary artery disease
- For patients with hypercholesterolemia associated with diabetes mellitus or renal transplantation

Precautions
Liver function tests should be performed before initiation of treatment and periodically thereafter. Discontinue therapy if markedly elevated CPK levels occur or myopathy is diagnosed or suspected.

- Geriatric: Plasma concentrations are higher in healthy elderly subjects
- Pediatric: Pharmacokinetic data not available
- Gender: No clinically significant difference in LDL-C reduction between men and women
- Renal Insufficiency: No influence on plasma concentrations or LDL-C reduction
- Hepatic Insufficiency: Markedly increased plasma concentrations in chronic alcoholic liver disease patients

Interaction
- Increased Risk with Concurrent Administration of:

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this medication
- Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases
- History of serious adverse reaction to prior administration of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
Overdose Effects
Specific treatment is not available for atorvastatin overdose. The patient should be treated symptomatically and supportive measures instituted, as required.
