Indications

  • lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology

  • acid-stable
  • orally administered
  • rapid absorption
  • high concentration in phagocytes
  • active transport to infection site
  • long half-life
  • biliary excretion

Dosage

  • Oral:
    • 500 mg once daily for 3 days
    • 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days
  • Children:
    • 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days
    • 200 mg for 3 days (body weight 15-25 kg)
    • 300 mg for 3 days (body weight 26-35 kg)
    • 400 mg for 3 days (body weight 36-45 kg)
    • 500 mg for 7-10 days (typhoid fever)
  • Injection (IV Infusion):
    • 500 mg once daily for at least two days
    • 500 mg once daily for one or two days (pelvic inflammatory disease)

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
  • Co-administration with ergot derivatives

  • Cholestatic jaundice
  • Neutrophil count reduction
  • Hearing impairment (at higher doses for prolonged periods)

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B
  • No adequate studies in pregnant women
  • Caution during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Rare serious allergic reactions reported
  • Long observation and treatment for serious reactions

Use in Special Populations

  • No dose adjustment in mild renal impairment
  • Caution in severe renal impairment
  • Not to be used in hepatic impairment
  • No effect on ability to drive or use machines

  • Typical symptoms of macrolide antibiotics overdosage
  • Gastric lavage and supportive measures indicated
