Mode of Action
- Acid-stable and orally bioavailable

- Bacteriostatic levels maintained for several days

Pharmacology
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Polyphasic pattern of plasma concentration decline
- Terminal elimination half-life of 68 hours
- Biliary excretion as a major elimination route
- Active against various aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days
- Oral dosage for children based on body weight
- 500 mg as a single daily dose by intravenous route
Administration
- Oral administration at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
- Reconstitution procedure for oral suspension
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, terfenadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
- Co-administration with ergot derivatives
- Hepatic diseases
Side Effects
- Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side effects
- Allergic reactions including rash and photosensitivity
- Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
- Rare cases of cholestatic jaundice
- Reversible hearing impairment with prolonged use

- No evidence of harm to fetus in animal studies
- Caution needed during breastfeeding
