Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Otitis media
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Non-gonococcal urethritis
- Cervicitis
Pharmacology
- Acid-stable
- Readily absorbed
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Long half-life
- Acts by binding to 50S ribosomal subunit
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days (adult)
- 1 gm given as a single dose (adult)
- 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days (children)
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension
- Should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids
- Interaction with carbamazepine
- Interference with cyclosporin metabolism
- Reported impairment of digoxin metabolism
- Contraindication with ergot derivatives
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
- Co-administration with ergot derivatives
- Hepatic diseases
Side Effects
- Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side-effects
- Allergic reactions
- Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
- Rare cases of cholestatic jaundice
- Transient mild reductions in neutrophil counts
- Rare reversible hearing impairment

- Category B in pregnancy
- No evidence of harm to the fetus
- Caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported
- Caution in patients with renal impairment
- Not recommended in patients with hepatic impairment
Special Populations
- No dose adjustment in mild renal impairment
- Not recommended in patients with hepatic disease
- No evidence of effect on driving or machine operation
Overdose Effects
- Typical symptoms include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Gastric lavage and supportive measures indicated
