Pharmacology
- Selective beta1-blocker

Dosage & Administration
- Total daily dosage range of 100-400 mg
- Twice-daily dose for hypertension if full control not achieved with a single daily dose
- Various dosages for different conditions such as angina, cardiac arrhythmias, hyperthyroidism, and myocardial infarction
- Initial and maintenance dosage for extended-release tablets
- Intravenous injection dosage for arrhythmias, surgery, and myocardial infarction
Interaction
- Additive effect with catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Increase in concentration with CYP2D6 inhibiting drugs
- Increased risk of bradycardia with concomitant use of digitalis glycosides and beta-blockers
- Exacerbation of rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal

- Precipitation or aggravation of symptoms of arterial insufficiency in patients with peripheral vascular disease
- Caution in use with calcium channel blockers
Use in Special Populations
- Caution in use with impaired hepatic function
- Similar adverse event profile for pediatric patients aged 6 to 16 years as compared with adult patients
- Safety and effectiveness not established in patients <6 years of age
- No notable differences in efficacy or adverse events between older and younger patients
Overdose Effects
- Manifestations such as hypotension, bradycardia, atrioventricular block, heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and others
- Close monitoring and treatment of cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal function
- Prevention of further absorption by induction of vomiting, gastric lavage, or administration of activated charcoal if ingestion is recent
- Treatment of cardiovascular complications via sympathomimetic agents, atropine, inotropic agents, and temporary pacing if required
