Pharmacology

  • Orally administered

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 500 mg once daily for 3 days
  • Children dosage based on body weight
  • Azithromycin injection dosage for pneumonia and pelvic inflammatory disease

Administration

  • Oral suspension reconstitution procedure
  • Timing of intake in relation to meals

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, terfenadine

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
  • Co-administration with ergot derivatives
  • Hepatic diseases

Side Effects

  • Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side-effects

  • Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
  • Rare cases of cholestatic jaundice
