Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Otitis media
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Sexually transmitted diseases in men and women
Pharmacology
- Orally administered
- Readily absorbed
- Time to peak concentration: 2.1 to 3.2 hours
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Actively transported to the site of infection
- Bacterial protein synthesis interference
- Active against various microorganisms
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily for 3 days
- 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days
- 1 gm single dose for Chlamydia trachomatis
- 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days for child over 6 months
- Azithromycin injection for IV infusion
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension
- Shake the bottle well to loosen the powder
- Add boiled and cooled water
- Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Interaction
- Antacid interaction
- Carbamazepine interaction
- Cyclosporin interference
- Digoxin metabolism impairment
- Avoid co-administration with ergot derivatives
- No significant effect on theophylline
- No alteration of warfarin's anticoagulant effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
- Co-administration with ergot derivatives
- Patients with hepatic diseases

- Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
- Rare cases of serious hypersensitivity reactions

- Demonstrated no harm to the fetus in animal studies
