Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
- Activity against β-lactamase producing strains
- Stability to bacterial β-lactamase

- Dosage for adolescents and adults
- Dosage for paediatric patients
- Dosage for parenteral use
Administration
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended
- Potency maintenance up to 48 hours at 5<sup>o</sup> C

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Infrequent and generally mild and transient adverse effects
- Reported effects include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms e.g. Candida
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category of Cefuroxime is B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Cefuroxime shown to be excreted in human milk
- Caution advised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Caution for patients with history of colitis
- Cross reactions with penicillin reported
