  • Interference with Insulin release
  • Interference with carbohydrate metabolism

Interaction

  • Additive effect with catecholamine-depleting drugs
  • Increased concentration with CYP2D6 inhibitors
  • Increased risk of bradycardia with digitalis glycosides
  • Exacerbation of rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal

  • AV block
  • Uncontrolled heart failure
  • Severe bradycardia
  • Sick-sinus syndrome
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Severe peripheral arterial disease
  • Known hypersensitivity to Metoprolol or other B-blockers

  • Masking of tachycardia occurring with hypoglycemia
  • Possible aggravation of symptoms in patients with peripheral vascular disease
  • Caution in patients treated with calcium channel blockers concomitantly

Use in Special Populations

  • Caution in patients with impaired hepatic function
  • Safety and effectiveness not established in patients <6 years of age

Overdose Effects

  • Severe hypotension
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Atrioventricular block
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Bronchospasm
  • Impairment of consciousness
  • Coma
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Cyanosis
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Manifestations appearing 20 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion
  • Treatment involving close monitoring of cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal function
  • Treatment may include sympathomimetic agents, inotropic agents, and temporary pacing for AV block
  • Glucagon administration to reverse excessive B-blockade
  • Intravenous B2-stimulants for relieving bronchospasm
