Indications

  • Treatment of Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Treatment of Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae
  • Treatment of Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumoniae caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella spp.
  • Treatment of Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Treatment of Secondary bacterial infections of Acute bronchitis
  • Treatment of Skin and skin-structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of Urinary tract infections caused by E.coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Treatment of Bone and Joint Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Treatment of Gonorrhoea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Pharmacology

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Adverse effects occurred infrequently and generally mild and transient in nature
  • Effects reported include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms e.g. Candida

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category of Cefuroxime is B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution for patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Cephalosporins may generally be given safely to patients hypersensitive to penicillin
  • Cross reactions reported, although not likely at recommended dose levels
