Description
Dopamine antagonist medication used to treat dyspeptic symptoms, acute nausea and vomiting, Parkinson's disease, and speeding barium transit in radiological studies.
DosageAndAdministration
- To be taken 15-30 minutes before meals
- Usual adult dose: 10-20 mg (1-2 tablets or 10-20 ml suspension) every 6-8 hours daily
- Maximum dose: 80 mg daily
- Children's dose: 2-4 ml suspension/10 kg body weight every 6-8 hours daily
Pharmacology
Blocks dopamine receptors in the Chemoreceptor-Trigger Zone and stomach, restores normal motility and tone of the upper gastrointestinal tract, facilitates gastric emptying, enhances antral and duodenal peristalsis, and regulates contraction of the pylorus.
Interaction
- Antagonized by anticholinergic drugs
- Simultaneous use with antacids and antisecretory drugs lowers oral bioavailability
- Metabolic pathway involves CYP3A4
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Neonates
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction or perforation
- Prolactin releasing pituitary tumor
