Pharmacology
- Decrease in total peripheral vascular resistance
- Selective inhibition of postsynaptic alpha-1-adrenoreceptors
- Therapeutic efficacy in patients with congestive heart failure
- Reduction in left ventricular filling pressure
- Reduction in cardiac impedance
- Augmentation of cardiac output
- Improvement of urinary pressure profile in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
- No adverse changes in the serum lipid profile
Dosage & Administration
- Therapy initiated with a low starting dose
- Dosage adjusted according to the patient's individual toleration
- Small increases in dosage until the desired effect is achieved
- Recommended starting dose for left ventricular failure: 0.5 mg two, three or four times a day
- Recommended starting dosage for Raynaud's Phenomenon And Raynaud's Disease: 0.5 mg b.i.d.
- Recommended starting dose for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: 0.5 mg twice daily
Interaction
- No adverse drug interaction with cardiac glycosides, hypoglycemic agents, tranquilizers, sedatives, antiarrhythmic agents, and analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory agents
Contraindications
- Known sensitivity to quinazolines

Precautions & Warnings
- Occasional exaggerated response leading to postural hypotension
- Observance of the recommended starting dose in left ventricular failure
- Careful monitoring of blood pressure during administration for Raynaud's and benign prostatic hyperplasia
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for children under the age of 12 years
- Not recommended for left ventricular failure due to mechanical obstruction
Overdose Effects
- Support of the cardiovascular system is of first importance
- Renal function monitored and supported as needed
- Prazosin is not dialyzable because it is protein bound
