Indications
- Treatment of essential or secondary hypertension
- Treatment of left ventricular failure
- Treatment of Raynaud's phenomenon and Raynaud's disease
- Adjunct in symptomatic treatment of urinary obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia
Pharmacology
- Decrease in total peripheral vascular resistance
- Selective inhibition of postsynaptic alpha-1-adrenoreceptors in vascular smooth muscle
- Lowering of blood pressure in supine and standing positions
- Reduction in left ventricular filling pressure
- Reduction in cardiac impedance
- Augmentation of cardiac output
Dosage & Administration
- Therapy initiated with a low starting dose for best toleration
- Adjustment of dosage according to patient's individual toleration
- Response seen within one to 14 days
- Dosage titration steps based on clinical response
- Recommended starting dose for left ventricular failure
- Suggested starting dosage for Raynaud's phenomenon and Raynaud's disease
Interaction
- No adverse drug interaction with cardiac-glycosides
- No adverse drug interaction with hypoglycemic agents
- No adverse drug interaction with tranquilizers and sedatives
- No adverse drug interaction with antiarrhythmic agents
- No adverse drug interaction with analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory agents

Precautions & Warnings
- Postural hypotension in a small percentage of patients
- Avoiding symptoms resulting from postural hypotension
- Careful monitoring of blood pressure during initial administration
- Careful monitoring of blood pressure for patients taking medication known to lower BP
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for children under the age of 12 years
Overdose Effects
- Accidental ingestion in a child resulted in profound drowsiness and depressed reflexes
- No decrease in blood pressure noted
- Support of the cardiovascular system is of first importance
