Terazon 2 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Relief from signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
• Treatment of hypertension

Description

Selective alpha-1 adrenoreceptor competitive blocking agent with a longer duration of action. Quinazoline derivative. Rapidly absorbed and performs activity within 15 minutes after oral ingestion.

Pharmacology

Selective for alpha-1-adrenoceptors, relaxes smooth muscle in blood vessels and the prostate, lowers blood pressure, improves urinary flow, induces apoptosis of prostate cells.

Dosage & Administration

• Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia:
  • Initial dose: 1 mg at bedtime
  • Usual recommended dose range: 5-10 mg administered once a day
• Hypertension:
  • Initial dose: 1 mg at bedtime
  • Usual recommended dose range: 2-10 mg administered once a day

Interaction

• Increased dizziness with ACE inhibitors or diuretics
• No interaction with analgesics/anti-inflammatory, cardiac glycosides, hypoglycemic drugs, etc.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Terazosin or its analogues

Side Effects

• Postural hypotension
• Dizziness
• Lack of energy
• Peripheral oedema
• Urinary frequency
• Priapism

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended during pregnancy unless benefit justifies risk to mother and fetus
• Caution with breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• First dose may cause hypotension
• Caution with other antihypertensive agents
• Avoid hazardous tasks where injury could result due to syncope
• Avoid situations such as driving

Overdose Effects

Acute hypotension, cardiovascular support is of first importance. Restoration of blood pressure and normalization of heart rate may be needed.
