Description
Alestor is an oral Gestagen with a potent pregnancy-maintaining action without producing hormonal side-effects, stimulates the endocrine function of the trophoblast, and very well tolerated with no observed major side-effects.
Pharmacology
- Weak progestational effect on the human endometrium
- Stimulates synthesis of progesterone in the human placenta
- Increases specific placental enzymes production
- Stimulates placental function
- Suppresses intensity of spontaneous uterine contractions in high doses
- No estrogenic or androgenic properties
- No adverse effects on adrenal function
- No abnormal liver function tests or water and salt retention
Dosage & Administration
Intra Uterine Growth Retardation: 1 tablet three times a day for at least two months. Dose to be reduced if symptoms improve. Threatened abortion: 1 tablet three times daily until symptoms disappear. Habitual abortion: 1-2 tablets daily as soon as pregnancy is diagnosed for at least one month after the end of the critical period. Threatened premature delivery: Dosage determined individually, high dosages (up to 40 mg daily) used.
Contraindications
- Breast Cancer or history of breast problems
- Severe liver disease
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Toxaemia of Pregnancy
- Crisis Seizures, Migraines
Side Effects
May cause gastrointestinal complaints such as vomiting, nausea, and epigastric discomfort.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Designed for use during pregnancy, should be discontinued after delivery as it may affect a nursing infant to a small but noticeable degree.
Precautions & Warnings
Cautious use for patients with heart disease, seizures, renal dysfunction, migraine headaches, breathing diseases, and breast-feeding.
Use in Special Populations
Not to be used for children younger than 16 years old.
Overdose Effects
May include unusual drowsiness, rapid pulse, fainting, unusual muscle movement or rigidity of the face, neck, or limbs, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
