Indications
- Mild-to-moderate hypertension
- Severe hypertension
- Congestive heart failure
Pharmacology
- Sulfhydryl-containing analog
- Antihypertensive activity
- Competitively inhibits ACE
- Decreases levels of angiotensin II
- Increases plasma renin activity
- Decreases aldosterone secretion
- Rapid absorption from GI tract
- Renally excreted
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose for mild-to-moderate hypertension: 12.5 mg twice daily
- Usual maintenance dose for mild-to-moderate hypertension: 25mg twice daily
- Maximum dose for mild-to-moderate hypertension: 50 mg twice daily
- Starting dose for severe hypertension: 12.5 mg twice daily
- Maximum dose for severe hypertension: 50 mg three times daily
- Starting dose for heart failure: 6.25mg or 12.5mg
- Usual maintenance dose for heart failure: 25mg three times a day
- Maximum dose for heart failure: 150 mg daily
- Must be taken 1 hour before meals
- Not established for pediatric patients
Interaction
Do not coadminister aliskiren with Catopil in patients with diabetes. Monitor renal function periodically.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to captopril
- Contra-indicated in pregnancy
- Not for use in women of child-bearing potential
