Pharmacology

3rd generation broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic

Mechanism of Action

Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall, long plasma elimination half-life, not metabolized in the body

Dosage

  • Usual dose of 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum dose of 4 gm/day

Administration

  • Intramuscular Injection with Lidocaine HCI 1%
  • Intravenous Injection with Water for injection

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Gastro-intestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
  • Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria, edema
  • Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, anemia
  • Hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia
  • CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, headache
  • Local phlebitis following intravenous administration

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Safety in human pregnancy not established
  • Low concentrations excreted in human milk

Precautions and Warnings

  • Anaphylactic shock precautions
  • Caution in lactating mothers
