Pharmacology
3rd generation broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
Mechanism of Action
Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall, long plasma elimination half-life, not metabolized in the body
Dosage
- Usual dose of 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum dose of 4 gm/day
Administration
- Intramuscular Injection with Lidocaine HCI 1%
- Intravenous Injection with Water for injection

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria, edema
- Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, anemia
- Hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia
- CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, headache
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established
- Low concentrations excreted in human milk
