Composition
- Each tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Each DX tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Each effervescent tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Adequate calcium for bodily functions
- Useful for preventing & treating osteoporosis and associated fractures
- Essential for healthy bones
- Stimulates bone formation
- Coral Calcium sourced from coral origin for better absorption
- Vitamin D3 aids in absorption from GI tract and maintains Calcium balance
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician
- Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water and drink orally
- Taking with a full stomach ensures better absorption
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations
- Hypercalcemia may increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides during treatment with calcium and vitamin D
- Oxalic acid and phytic acid found in certain foods may inhibit calcium absorption
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the GI tract
- May cause constipation
- Rarely produces hypercalcemia when given in large doses to patients with chronic renal failure
- May cause allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, and drowsiness
- Vitamin D Supplements may cause skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided in pregnant women
- No indications that vitamin D at therapeutic doses is teratogenic in humans
- Elemental Calcium & Vitamin D3 tablet can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- During long-term treatment, serum calcium levels should be followed and renal function monitored
- Caution in elderly patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics
- Vitamin D should be used with caution in patients with impairment of renal function
- Caution in patients suffering from sarcoidosis
- Caution in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
- Dose of vitamin D should be considered when prescribing other drugs containing vitamin D
Overdose Effects
- Can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcemia
- Symptoms of hypercalcemia may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances
- Treatment involves discontinuation of calcium and other implicated medications, rehydration, and monitoring of electrolytes and renal function
