Description

Reef-DX 600 mg Tablet is a combination of calcium carbonate and vitamin D3. It is used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiency. Calcium is important for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Reef-DX is indicated for the treatment & prevention of Osteoporosis, Osteomalacia, Tetany, Hypoparathyroidism, Disorders of osteogenesis, inadequate intake of Calcium in childhood diet, rickets, pancreatitis, phosphate binder in chronic renal failure etc. Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU. Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital for a wide variety of bodily functions, and Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones as it aids in Calcium absorption from the GI tract and stimulates bone formation. Reef-DX is contraindicated in cases of Hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation, severe renal insufficiencies, and concomitant digoxin therapy.

Composition

  • Each tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU

Mode of Action

  • Aids in prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis and associated fractures
  • Essential for healthy bones and Calcium absorption from the GI tract
  • Stimulates bone formation
  • Has synergistic effects with Vitamin D on bone growth, Osteoporosis, and fracture prevention

Dosage & Administration

One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician. Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water to drink orally. Taking the tablet with food ensures better absorption.

Interaction

  • Thiazide diuretics may reduce urinary excretion of calcium
  • Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
  • Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
  • Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline preparations
  • Hypercalcaemia may increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides during treatment with calcium and vitamin D
  • Reef-DX timing in relation to bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride intake
  • Substances inhibiting calcium absorption like oxalic acid and phytic acid

Precautions & Warnings

  • Long-term treatment requires monitoring of serum calcium levels and renal function
  • Caution in the elderly, patients with a high tendency to calculus formation, impairment of renal function, sarcoidosis, and immobilized patients with osteoporosis
  • Monitoring of serum calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion frequently in cases of additional doses of calcium or vitamin D

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy:
    • Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol (15 mcg vitamin D)
    • Overdoses should be avoided as they may lead to permanent hypercalcaemia with adverse effects on the developing fetus
  • Lactation: Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk and should be considered when giving additional vitamin D to the child

Overdose Effects

  • Hypervitaminosis D
  • Hypercalcaemia
  • Symptoms include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, bone pain, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias
  • Persistently high calcium levels may lead to irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification
