Indications
- Used to stop breast milk production (lactation) after childbirth, stillbirth, abortion or miscarriage
- Can be used to treat conditions caused by hormonal disturbance resulting in high levels of prolactin
Description
- Belongs to a group of drugs called dopamine receptor agonists
- Reduces the amount of prolactin released from the pituitary gland
- Treats hormone imbalance with excessive prolactin in the blood
Pharmacology
- Dopamine receptor agonist
- Exerts inhibitory effect on prolactin secretion by pituitary lactotrophs
- Has low affinity for dopamine D1, alpha1, alpha2 adrenergic, and 5HT1, 5HT2 serotonin receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage: 0.25 mg twice a week
- Dosage may be increased up to 1 mg twice a week
- Dosage increases not more frequent than every 4 weeks for physician assessment
Interaction
- Interacts with medicines to lower blood pressure, treat mental illness, nausea and vomiting, and severe migraine headaches
Contraindications
- History of serious mental disease, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure in pregnancy, antipsychotic use or history of mental illness associated with childbirth
Side Effects
- Pregnancy category B
- Should not be taken by pregnant women planning to breastfeed
- Discontinue after one month of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings
- Hypersensitive to Caberol or other ergot alkaloids
- Severe liver disease, high blood pressure in pregnancy

- Caution in patients with hepatic impairment or fibrotic reactions affecting the heart
Overdose Effects
- May produce nasal congestion, syncope, or hallucinations
- Supportive measures for blood pressure may be necessary
