Composition
- Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source)
- Each tablet contains Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Each DX tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source)
- Each DX tablet contains Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Each effervescent tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source)
- Each effervescent tablet contains Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital for bodily functions
- Clinical evidence suggests Calcium is useful for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis
- Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption and stimulates bone formation
- Clinical studies show synergistic effects of Calcium and Vitamin D on bone growth and prevention of osteoporosis and fractures
- Coral Calcium sourced from coral origin with a structure similar to human bone composition for better absorption
- Vitamin D3 aids in Calcium absorption and helps in maintaining Calcium balance in the body
Dosage & Administration
One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with absorption of tetracycline preparations
- Hypercalcaemia may increase toxicity of cardiac glycosides during treatment with calcium and vitamin D
- Concomitant use of bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride may reduce gastrointestinal absorption
- Oxalic acid and phytic acid from specific foods may inhibit calcium absorption
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Oral administration of Calcium Carbonate may irritate the GI tract
- May cause constipation, hypercalcemia, allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, drowsiness
- Vitamin D supplement may cause skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake limitations during pregnancy
- Reproductive toxicity observed with high dose of vitamin D in animals
- Avoid overdoses as it may lead to adverse effects on the developing fetus
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitoring of serum calcium levels and renal function during long-term treatment
- Monitoring especially important for elderly patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics
- Renal function monitoring for patients with high tendency to calculus formation
- Caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion for immobilized patients with osteoporosis
- Consideration of vitamin D dose when prescribing other drugs containing vitamin D
Overdose Effects
Can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcemia, symptoms may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, polydipsia, polyuria, bone pain, nephrocalcinosis, nephrolithiasis, cardiac arrhythmias, coma, and death
