Indications
- Essential hypertension
- Stable coronary artery disease
- Congestive heart failure
Pharmacology
ACE inhibitor that works by blocking the action of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), reducing the production of angiotensin II and allowing blood vessels to relax and widen
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended daily dosage of 4mg once daily for hypertension, can be increased to 8mg
- Initial dose of 4mg once daily for stable coronary artery disease, can be increased to 8mg
- Initial dose of 2mg for congestive heart failure, may be increased to 4mg
Interaction
May interact with diuretics, K supplements, K-sparing diuretics, ciclosporin, heparin, indometacin, lithium, aspirin, NSAIDs, antidiabetic agents, and gold (Na aurothiomalate)
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Perindopril, management of hypertension in children, and during pregnancy & lactation
Side Effects
- Rare: cough, fatigue, asthenia, headache
- Less often: taste impairment, epigastric discomfort, nausea, abdominal pain, rash, reversible increase in blood urea and creatinine, proteinuria
- Rarely: angioneurotic edema, decrease in hemoglobin, red cells, and platelets
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy & lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in renovascular hypertension, surgery/anesthesia, renal failure, symptomatic hypotension, diuretic-treated patients, combination with neuroleptics or imipramine-type drugs, and during serum lithium therapy
