Indications
- Treatment of airflow obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Long-term maintenance bronchodilator treatment
- Treatment of chronic bronchitis and emphysema
Description
- Acts as a long-acting β2-adrenergic agonist
- Local bronchodilator effect in the lung
- Stimulation of intracellular adenyl cyclase
- Conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic-3’,5’-adenosine monophosphate (cyclic monophosphate)
- Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle
Dosage & Administration
- Oral inhalation only
- Once-daily maintenance dosage
- Recommended dosage of 75 mcg, 150 mcg, 300 mcg
- Use with specified device
- Administration at the same time every day
- Caution for missed doses
Interaction
- Interactions with Adrenergic Drugs, Xanthine Derivatives, Steroids, or Diuretics
- Potentiation of hypokalemic effect
- Caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants
- Potential interference with beta-blockers
Contraindications
- Not indicated for asthma treatment
- History of hypersensitivity to the product or its ingredients
Side Effects
- Commonly reported effects: cough, nasopharyngitis, headache, nausea, oropharyngeal pain
- Other reported effects: hypersensitivity reactions, paradoxical bronchospasm, tachycardia, pruritis, dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Lack of well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution for use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of serious (sometimes fatal) breathing problems in asthma patients
- Not approved for asthma treatment
- Similarity to salmeterol in causing serious breathing problems
Overdose Effects
- Signs and symptoms associated with excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation
- Potential effects: angina, hypertension or hypotension, tachycardia, arrhythmias, nervousness, headache, tremor, dry mouth, palpitation, muscle cramps, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, malaise, hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis, insomnia, cardiac arrest, death
