Indications

  • Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients
  • Intolerance to oral iron
  • Non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease

Description

  • Colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose
  • Carbohydrate polymer that releases iron

Dosage & Administration

  • Stepwise approach for Ferric Carboxymaltose posology
  • Individual iron need determination
  • Calculation and administration of the iron dose(s)
  • Post-iron repletion assessments
  • Maximum individual iron dose(s)
  • Re-assessment of patient's condition
  • Determination of iron need based on body weight and haemoglobin level

Interaction

  • No formal drug interaction studies performed

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients
  • Serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products
  • Anaemia not attributed to iron deficiency
  • Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in utilisation

Side Effects

  • Infrequent and mild side effects
  • Common side effects: nausea, headache, dizziness, hypertension, injection site reactions
  • Uncommon side effects: hypersensitivity, dysgeusia, tachycardia, hypotension, flushing
  • Rare side effects: anaphylactoid reactions, loss of consciousness, anxiety, phlebitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women
  • Animal data suggest influence on fetal skeletal development
  • Limited data on breast-feeding women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions reported
  • Monitoring for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity
  • Transient elevations in systolic blood pressure
  • Laboratory test alterations

Use in Special Populations

  • Maximum daily injection dose for haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients
  • Not recommended in children under 14 years

Overdose Effects

  • Accumulation of iron in storage sites
  • Hemosiderosis potential
  • Monitoring of iron parameters such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation
  • Consideration of iron chelator
